Here near the Continental Divide you will find a monument which reads:
"Along these waterways and trails, history has passed.
The Chicago Portage has served as the connecting link
between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River system."
"In 1673, led by American Indians,
explorers Marquette and Jolliet became
the first Europeans to cross this portage.
This route encouraged the development of the
I&M Canal and the growth of Chicago."
This is the newest marker for the Chicago Portage. Find a boulder which marked the site a hundred
years ago, but was defaced 50 years later.
